Joining Scott will be local guitar legend Steve Ellis, who has co-written many songs featured on their new CD CORNFED, released in January. Influenced by the sound of the late Gram Parsons' "cosmic American" blend of country, rock, and soul, Scott and Steve mix solid roots rock with old-fashioned American twang. Last summer, the University of Iowa's resident string quartet, the Maia Quartet, went to China to perform in an international festival and to teach promising young Chinese students. Some of those students are now studying in the United States and they'll be our guests--along with the Maia Quartet—on this program, which will be a mix of exciting performances and cross-cultural conversation.

Know the Score returns to the Carl and Mary Koehler History Center in Cedar Rapids for an introduction of sorts to the museum's reconditioned grand piano that had a long life at the historic Danceland Ballroom. Cedar Rapids legend Eddie Picard and his Jazz Trio will perform live and we'll talk to musicians who played in the ballroom as well as people who remember dancing there between 1920 and 1960. More surprises await—this should be fun!

Join us at the Des Moines Art Center where we'll hear about the final exhibition of the DMAC's anniversary year—the first one-person museum exhibition in the United States for the Chinese artist Yan Pei-Ming, who divides his time among studios in Shanghai as well as Paris and Dijon, France. Yan is considered one of the foremost Chinese artists working today, creating large, vibrant, expressionistic paintings and watercolors. His subject matter often includes self-portraits and portraits of family members or political figures, such as Mao and American presidents.
